World Intellectual Property day 2024

AB & CO is wishing all our esteemed clients a “Happy World Intellectual Property day”, celebrating innovation and creativity.

Today we recognize the importance of protecting Intellectual property rights, a cornerstone of contributing to innovation and economic growth. As a leading firm in the Gambia, specializing in intellectual property law, we are committed to helping individuals and businesses safeguard their innovations, inventions, trademarks, and creative works. Our team of experienced attorneys work tirelessly to provide expert guidance and representation in all aspects of intellectual property protection, from patent prosecution to trademark registration and enforcement.

Here are 7 facts on Intellectual Property:

    1. Intellectual Property: creators and innovators worldwide use IP to translate their ideas into assets.
    2. Patents: are an exclusive right granted for securing an invention which is a product or a process providing a new way of doing something, or offers a new technical solution to a problem.
    3. Copyrights; protects original works such as books, music, paintings, sculpture, and films, to computer programs, databases, advertisements, maps, and technical drawings.
    4. Trademarks: is any word, signs,symbols or designs used to identify and distinguish goods or services from others in the marketplace. In 2019, the trademark for the word ‘face’ was sold by Facebook to a company called ‘Face’ for $100 million.
    5. Trade Secrets: Valuable and confidential information that gives businesses a competitive edge, such as formulas, processes, customer lists, and marketing strategies often gives the company a competitive advantage.
    6. IP in The Gambia: The Gambia joined the World Intellectual Property Organization Convention in 1980 and is regulated according to The Industrial Property Act (and associated Industrial Property Regulations, 2010).
    7. International Arrangements: The Gambia is a signatory to the following treaties;
      • ARIPO, since January 16, 1986.
      • Paris Convention, since January 21, 1992, but no enabling local law yet
      • Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), by Chapter I and II, as of December 9, 1997, but no enabling local law yet (Jan. 2001).

On this World IP Day, let us uphold the value of intellectual property and support the innovators and creators who drive our world forward. Together, let’s continue to protect and promote the fruits of human ingenuity for the betterment of society.
